UNIT 1 - MYPedia
Webdesign
In Unit1 students created an online design encyclopedia called MYPedia. A project that intends to continue in the years to come with the aim that every year, each MYP4 student contributes with an original article about a design company, brand, product, or designer.
This project started this year and the students, in addition to investigating and creating an original article each, designed the structure/sections of the website and the layout of its pages.
Find out more about this project by following the link (“visit website” button).
Don’t forget to leave your comment. Your feedback is very important for our students.
Fellow students, parents and Ermitage staff, we would love to hear your feedback!

Comments will be moderated prior to being published; thank you for your patience until they show on the website.
UNIT 2 - Have a seat
Product Design
In this unit students designed inclusive chairs taking into account the circumstances of users with special needs.
Seven types of users were proposed to students. Each student had to choose one user, study his needs and ergonomics, and design an original chair that best suited that person.
To see the students’ prototypes in more detail, explore the gallery of images and descriptions of each project.

I designed this chair for a grandpa who loves to read the newspaper while eating cookies. He has difficulties walking that’s why I created a prototype of an electrical chair using an electrical toy car. To create the chair I used foam and glued it together with hot glue, then I decorated the structure, for it to have a place for cookies, for a glass of water, and more.

I designed my chair for a baby called Maggy, and while designing this chair I intend to design a chair with which babies can be relaxed and put their stuff like a baby bottle and the other needs as well. This chair will be made out of wood to be more resistant, fabric to be comfortable, and leather because it will be easy to clean.

My chair client was a 1-year-old baby. The chair allows the baby to be independent as it has: crawling/sleeping place, foldable chair and table for eating/drawing, entertainment (spinning/buttons) with safety precautions and basic necessities. The chair is easy to maintain as it has wheels to move around and is made out of plastic, expanded polyurethane and cotton which are easily cleanable.

This chair was designed for "Ralph", the teenager. He is a bit like me who spends quite a bit of time behind a desk working and needs a comfy chair to sit in. The main need of my user is that he has a large bag which he carries around in the day so I had a built-in cubby hole where he can place his bag in.
My design was a simple design which is walls put together to create a solid hollow chair. Before building the chair I had taken the right measurements and angles for the perfect position. The materials used to create this chair were nails, screws, wood, and a bunch of power tools.
I chose to design a chair for an elderly man, specifically a grandpa. The main needs of my client were to have a large comfortable chair that allows him to sit comfortably the whole day.
The chair I created has a backrest and optional leg rest so the client can adjust it whenever he pleases. The chair has metal legs which allow the chair to be sturdy and have balance, the inside of the chair has wool and foam which allows the client to sit comfortably, and around everything is the leather which is easy to wash and it is comfortable to sit on for long periods of time.

My chair model was designed for an astronaut for space travel, therefore, I made a design that would be somewhat suitable for space travel. The main needs for my user was a chair that was strong, had storage, attached to the ground, comfortable to sit in for long periods of time.

The user for my chair was Ted Johnson and when he was born he had his legs amputated. The reason I made this chair is for daily home activities or if he just wants to sit down and relax the main reason is how to relax since it would have a belt that he would be able to clip on so he doesn’t fall off. The materials I would you to make the real chair would be a metal frame and cotton to cover the insides and I would use brown leather for the outsides.
UNIT 3 - Digital Story
Digital Design
In this unit, students were asked to design a digital story using video editing software. After exploring the main aspects of cinematography, writing their original scripts, and creating their storyboards, the students were ready to start filming. However, due to COVID 19, we all went on lockdown, making this project unfeasible.
With great luck, one of our students managed to complete his project as his shootings were intended to be done at home and he decided to use an online video editing software.
To find out more about his project, watch the video presented here.

The idea behind this trailer was to create tension and suspense from an action thriller film on “Who Came First” using my chickens at home.
The process to get the content was easier than using human characters as chickens were better to work with. I had used the help from my dad and brother to film the scenes. The editing software used was easy as I do like editing and I had done it before.

UNIT 4
COVID 19 Design Challenge
This project arose from the current situation and the need to find a feasible assignment.
The students were asked to interview people in confinement and define one of the “problems” that emerged from it. Students were also asked to develop a design solution, taking into account the tools available at their homes, and trying to respond to the needs of these people, helping to solve their problem.
To find out more about the different design projects developed by our students, please explore the video and image gallery and read the projects' descriptions.

For my COVID-19 project I chose to make two recipes and one video to help people make healthy snacks at home during the confinement.
My project was aimed for anyone that wanted to do something with their time with the things they had at home.
I created a short video with all the steps to make a healthy banana bread and had the ingredients and measurements on the side.

My issue was that students couldn’t get their individual tutoring to get effective learnings, in order to get higher grades. The impact to my client will be that they can remember this knowledge from time to time since it is in the computer, they can save it somewhere and still have look in it in the future, to remember what they have learnt in the past.

The problem during confinement that I have addressed was people were not exercising enough because we are stuck in our own homes unable to do many exercises. My solution to this problem was to make a website to inform people about exercises you could do in small spaces as well as information about the benefits of exercise.

COVID 19 was the most stressful time of this year, and at this time I realized I was eating so unhealthy and also the majority of my friends having the same problem since the quarantine started and just to make people a bit happier and healthier I gave a recipe of strawberry smoothie.

I created a digital book that is very short but gives advice to people on how better to spend their time during the lockdown. People on lockdown need to take care of their skins and health because it’s 2 months of staying at home. My digital book answers this need by giving examples of fitness exercises you can do at home, a recipe on how to do a DIY face-mask, and also giving you advice on which type of face-mask to buy.
The problem I found out about Covid-19 is that everyone would be experiencing major boredom so I decided to search up idea’s and solutions to cure boredom Luckily I didn’t add too much writing otherwise my presentation would have been the opposite of curing boredom and then no one would truly listen to my idea’s.
