UNIT 1 - A spotlight on learning

Editorial Design

In this unit, students explored and learned about fonts, grids, margins, and layouts of different magazines as well as participated in identifying the specific audiences of different magazines.
For their design project, they investigated a design topic, transferred their findings into an article, and designed the magazine layout for it. To see their work in more detail, click on the gallery.

Don’t forget to leave your comment. Your feedback is very important for our students.

Fellow students, parents and Ermitage staff, we would love to hear your feedback!

UNIT 2 - Food for Thought

Packaging Design

In the second unit, students designed and made a package prototype for a chain of fast-food restaurants of their choice. The goal was to change its brand image and promote itself as a healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to other fast-food restaurants.
The factor “eco-friendly package material” was a key element in this project.

It is very important to note that the construction of the prototypes was carried out at home using the available materials, showing the ability that our students have to overcome challenges.

To learn more about each student’s work, explore the images and written descriptions displayed in the gallery.

My packaging is for the fast-food company, Taco Bell. It is meant for a menu consisting of a Burrito, a Drink, and Fries. It will be made out of a reusable fabric. The eco-friendly materials for the food themselves will be made out of, Banana Leaf to wrap the Burrito, Gelatin for the drink (is edible), and Potato Peel to hold the fries.

SELENE

My packaging is for KFC and it is for nuggets and on the side it has a compartment for two sauces. My eco-friendly material is starch because it is compostable. My measurements are 6 cm x 15 cm rectangles and I had two 6 cm x 6cm squares and I fitted them in like that.

CHARLES

I made a burger box design for the Mighty Mac burger from Supermacs. I chose to make my burger box in the shape of a burger as I thought it would be appealing and would draw the eye of the customer. It is made of polypropylene. I made it out of this because it is washable and reusable material.

NEIL

This video depicts the creation process of my burger packaging prototype for KFC’s Double Down Burger.  Because it should be sustainable, it’s made of bagasse - excess sugarcane.

MYSHA

This cup is a model made to package Starbucks drinks. It is eco-friendly. The cup in question was created to help cut down on plastic use in Starbucks coffee shops. The cup is made out of a kind of corn starch called PLA. It looks like plastic but is eco friendly and functional.

AMELIA

I designed a cup for the company, Starbucks Coffee and their drink, the Iced Caramel Macchiato. My design is a light bulb cup made out of clear seaweed. It is edible and biodegradable. The straw is also made out of this seaweed. The cap is made out of cork which is also biodegradable and recyclable.

I designed my packaging for it to simplify fast food packaging and to make it convenient for the customer. I made this packaging for Burger King, and It is designed to hold a whopper, a normal fries, a drink, and sauces + napkins. It would be made of Aluminium to make it light, and solid, it would be reusable, washable, and recyclable.

AYMEN

BARBORA

My prototype is a package for Burger King. It will contain a burger and fries. The main resource used in the package is corn starch because it is eco friendly.

DEWMMI

I made this pizza box for pizza hut. The main pizza box is cardboard. Tightly wrapped around it is a beeswax cover. It will be changed/recycled each time instead of the whole box. It has the ability to counteract environmental issues such as plastic pollution and food wastage. It is also antibacterial and can be printed on with organic food dye.

This package is made for mcdonalds. It would be made out of metal, therefore it is washable and reusable. Inside the box, we have space for a drink,a burger, fries and sauce. This package is mostly used inside the restaurant but can also be used for taking away.

I created an eco friendly cup for the Tim Hortons Candy Cane hot chocolate. It is made out of reusable plastic so you can wash it and then bring it back and reuse it. Tim Hortons is a Canadian brand so I tried to make the holder a maple leaf and the colors used are the same as the ones in the canadian flag.

sarah

My prototype was designed for Domino's. The packaging was to be made out of bamboo. Since my packaging is reusable, the system would be that if someone orders a pizza and returns the packaging, they get a 50% discount next time they eat in or out.

anita

I did my design for the Filet-O-Fish at Mc. Donalds. My packaging has two separate layers and a handle. In one you store the Filet-O-Fish and in the other you can store a side meal. My packaging will be made out of aluminum because it is reusable and washable.

magnus

I designed my package for Starbucks. It will be made of eco-friendly material, glass and it will use a system where you can pay more to take it home and if you bring it back you get a discount on your next drink.  I think that it is a good idea and it is a unique design hope you enjoyed.

diego

I designed this box for Mac Donalds, to contain a menu, and theirs a hole in the box so that you can put your drink in. For its production, the box would be made of transparent green silicone, an eco-friendly material, that you can wash it then they can use it again. The system I propose is when you are finished you give it back, they wash it and then you can have 10% off your next order. It has a lid that can clip on so it doesn't fall off.

ella

My prototype is for Mcdonalds and the food inside is a burger and any side. The original materials for the boxes are made of styrofoam and the cups are made from compostable cups. The burger would be in the bottom box and the side will be in the top box. The drink will be attached to the back of the box. There will a long ribbon attached to the sides of the boxes and a shorter ribbon attached to the cup to carry it through your arms
